COVID-19 Response
Education, Resources, Services, and Community Partnership
The South Central Prevention Coalition (SCPC) recognized our responsibility to promote health literacy around COVID-19, helping to slow the virus's spread and enabling community members to make informed decisions regarding vaccination. Our education and outreach efforts from 2020 to the present have contributed to mitigating increases in positive and/or severe COVID-19 cases. As a substance use prevention provider, we also aimed to reduce alcohol and drug use among youth and adults while addressing concerns about mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
In 2020, with support from former Los Angeles City Councilman and President Herb Wesson, and in collaboration with Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science, SCPC helped distribute PPE supplies to residents in Compton, South LA, and surrounding communities.
In partnership with Charles Drew University, the COVID-19 Prevention Network, faith-based communities, and other local organizations, we were able to provide COVID-19 vaccinations and testing throughout South Los Angeles. Additionally, our Sabbath Town Hall “The Intersection Between Faith and Wellness” Series offered a national platform for people to ask questions and receive accurate information from medical professionals and researchers about COVID-19 and the vaccine. The series was hosted by longtime local radio host and trusted community voice Roland Bynum.
